Making Tax Digital software

The two mistakes worth avoiding
HMRC recognises every product here, which means each one passed its technical process. It does not mean each one can do your tax. Two gaps catch people out, and neither is obvious until you have paid:
Only 77 of 127 do both quarterly updates and your tax return. The other 50 do one or the other. Buy one of those and you need a second product to finish the year — which is allowed, but it is two subscriptions and two things to learn.
Only 63 support foreign property. If you have an overseas rental, most of this list simply cannot file it. And remember foreign rents only count toward your threshold at all while you are UK tax resident.

How to read this
“Free version” means HMRC was told one exists
31 products have one. HMRC records nothing more than that — no prices, no tiers, no limits — so neither do we. HMRC’s own warning is worth repeating: free products suit simple affairs, but “there may be limits on how the product can be used, for example they could have a limited number of transactions.” Check the provider’s own site before committing.
Keeping records vs bridging
Software that creates digital records is where you do the bookkeeping — importing bank transactions, scanning receipts, or typing entries in. Bridging software (70 products) leaves your records where they are, usually a spreadsheet, and submits from them. If you already have a spreadsheet that works, bridging is often the smaller change.
Why the list is alphabetical
HMRC randomises its own results “to ensure fairness when displaying software choices”. We sort alphabetically instead, because it is stable enough to link to and because any other order would be an editorial ranking — and we have not tested a single one of these products. Nobody has paid for position and nobody can.
What HMRC says
“All software has passed HMRC’s recognition process. HMRC does not recommend any specific product and is not responsible for availability or whether the software meets a particular current or future need.”
That is the right posture and we copy it. This page tells you what each product claims to do, not which is good. For that, read reviews, take the free trials, and ask your accountant which one they can actually work with — that last question rules a lot of options out quickly.
Before you buy anything
Check you actually need it yet. The threshold is based on the return you have already filed, and plenty of people searching for software are a year or two early — or exempt and unaware.
Check whether you are in scope first, then see when your first update is due.
