Free Making Tax Digital software

31 of the 127 products HMRC recognises have a free version. Free does not mean unlimited.

HMRC’s own warning: free products suit simple affairs, but “there may be limits on how the product can be used, for example they could have a limited number of transactions.” HMRC records only that a free version exists — not what it includes. Check the provider’s own site before committing.

What to check before you rely on a free tier

Does it do both jobs? Only 19 of these 31 handle quarterly updates and your tax return. The rest leave you needing a second product.
Transaction limits. The most common cap, and the one that bites mid-year when you cannot easily switch.
Your income types. A free product that does not support property, or foreign property, cannot file it at any price.
Is it free forever, or a trial? HMRC does not distinguish.
